Freedom to Read Week

Freedom to Read Week     Bill Belfontaine & Doug Buck Sunday, February 20-27  The Social Justice Committee will be implementing a Freedom to Read Week in February to encourage members and friends of First to support openly our democratic freedom--the choice of what we read. Year 2011 is the 26th anniversary of the battle against banning, censorship, government cover-up and secrecy at any level. Amnesty International Concert

On Sunday March 27 at 3:30 pm in Sunderland Hall, Amnesty International and the Windermere String Quartet will present The Age of Enlightenment and Human Rights, an afternoon of music and ideas to benefit Amnesty International, hosted by Alexa Petrenko of Classical 96.3 FM. Become immersed in the time of Voltaire and the Philosophers; Beaumarchais’ witty satire of the ruling classes in his daring play, “The Marriage of Figaro”; the genius of Mozart and Beethoven flowering as freelance composers less dependent upon the court; and the great surge toward values of individual freedoms and human rights; talks by philosophers/authors Mark Kingwell and André Gombay; and music from the Golden Age of the String Quartet performed by the Windermere String Quartet on period instruments. Social Justice Resolution Process

Currently our congregation does not have a formal process in place for establishing a congregational position on social justice issues and concerns.  Over the past year the Social Justice Committee has been developing a Social Justice Resolution Process.  The committee presented the process to our Board in March and it was agreed to present the process to the members of the congregation at our Annual General Meeting.
