Since the 1500s, the Unitarian community has encouraged the individual search for truth and meaning. As Unitarians we believe that all people, whether with or without a faith community, should have access to spiritual ceremonies to mark important life events. We proudly offer services for interfaith couples and the LGBT community.
Ceremonies can take place in a variety of locations: at Toronto First Unitarian, at home, or in public or private halls or gardens. There are many possibilities. The venue should be private enough to ensure that your ceremony can be conducted with dignity and the degree of formality which is comfortable for you.
Our Lay Chaplains are members of our congregation who have been selected carefully for this important role. They are specially trained to provide these ceremonies and are provincially licensed wedding officiants. They will be pleased to meet with you to design individualized ceremonies which reflect your values and personal spirituality.
You can use their Wedding Ceremony Booklet (PDF) to help you start to personalize your service.
You are not restricted to materials in the booklet, but most couples find it helpful for putting together a meaningful service which reflects their backgrounds. Use your own readings, poems, or songs if you wish. We can incorporate service elements from other faiths, and we also conduct ceremonies with officiants from other faith traditions.
We look forward to making this service a wonderful experience for you and yours!
