We will present two episodes of the Israeli Netflix series “Shtisel” on Friday in the Library. Popcorn and juice will be served. English sub-titles.
Shtisel tells the story of an extended Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) family in Jerusalem. The patriarch Shulem, is the principal of a religious day school and he seeks to marry the last of his children, his son Akiva, who dreams of a career in art. Marriages in this community must be organized by a match-maker.
The series is not political at all but indeed exposes a very different world of modesty, of always thanking God before eating, drinking, or entering a house, with completely different roles for men and women. Shtisel is often funny but occasionally is also very sad. Written by two formally Haredi writers, the series rings true and is fascinating for Jew and non-Jew alike.
