UU-United Nations Office

Our beliefs are put into action on a global scale through our work at the United Nations via our UU UN Office, which has been representing us there (at the UN Church Center in New York, across the road from the great UN building), for half a century. This is how we work to achieve a liveable future for our children and all children. It is the most important legacy we can give them.In order to further the support for our work in our own congregation, and to share our creative ideas about it, we shall meet in the Board Room of our church on Sunday December 18 at 12.15 pm. For any further information, to confirm your attendance and/or provide input in advance, please contact Eryl Court, UU-UN Envoy for our congregation: (416 368 3270 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Occupy Training

Facilitators from Occupy Toronto will share with us the protocols and ethics developed by the movement. Come and explore the prospect of making First Unitarian the base of a local assembly that can generate actions, events and support for Occupy Toronto. Various Occupy actions are in the planning stages. Volunteers are welcome to join us at any time. A new phase of the Occupy Toronto movement is building on the formative experience of the St. James Park encampment and its daily General Assemblies. There, people of diverse age and background came together in dialogue and to listen to one another with mutual respect. A set of protocols was developed in order to foster openness to all voices, create a non-hierarchical structure, and seek decision making by consensus. The goal now is to enable the movement to spread and to “Occupy the Neighbourhoods” through the formation of local assemblies that will meet in alternation with less frequent General Assemblies. The local assemblies will focus the concerns and creative energies of smaller local groups that share in the Occupy movement’s desire to work towards a more just and compassionate society.

Learn Successful Use of Non-Violent Civil Disobedience Strategies

Sponsored by Occupy First Unitarian Congregation & Canadian Unitarians for Social Justice In the 1930’s, Gandhi led the people of India in a creative and effective strategy of refusing to cooperate with British rule. In the 1960’s, with discipline and training, black college students adapted Gandhi’s methods to desegregate Nashville lunch counters and stores. How can we, the 99%, apply their strategies to today’s struggle for equity? This event is one of a series. FREE

Non-Violent Civil Disobedience or Non-Civil Obedience?

Occupy First Unitarian Congregation and Canadian Unitarians for Social Justice invite you to join us to learn about   Non-Violent Civil Disobedience or Non-Civil Obedience? What Strategies Work?   In 1985, a young South African named Mkhuseli Jack led a movement against the legalized discrimination known as apartheid.  Their nonviolent mass action, notably a devastating consumer boycott, awakened whites to black grievances and fatally weakened business support for apartheid.   In April 1940, German military forces invaded Denmark. Danish leaders adopted a strategy of “resistance disguised as collaboration” - undermining enemy objectives by negotiating, delaying, and obstructing Nazi demands.  Underground resistance organized sabotage and strikes, and rescued all but a handful of Denmark’s 7,000 Jews.   How can we, the 99%, apply their strategies to today’s struggle for equity?   Free - Everyone is welcome. (This event is the second of a series.)
