Non-Violent Civil Disobedience or Non-Civil Obedience?

NON-VIOLENT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE  OR  NON-CIVIL OBEDIENCE?  WHAT STRATEGIES WORK? In 1980, striking shipyard workers in Poland demanded independent unions.  Driven underground by a government crackdown, how did they emerge as Poland’s governing political party in 1989?   In 1983, striking miners in Chile initiated a wave of peaceful protests against Gen. Pinochet’s dictatorship. Despite severe repression, how did it come about that Pinochet was finally defeated in a referendum in 1988? How can we, the 99%, apply their strategies to today’s struggle for equity? This event is the third in a series.  Free.  All welcome. Non-Violent Civil Disobedience or Non-Civil Obedience?

NON-VIOLENT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE OR NON-CIVIL OBEDIENCE? WHAT STRATEGIES WORK? In 2000, indicted war criminal Slobodan Milosevic fought to hold power with a battle-hardened army, a tough police force and most of the news media; but he underestimated the student movement, Otpor! (Serbian for “Resistance”), who attacked the regime with ridicule, rock music and a willingness to be arrested. How did they so undermine police and army loyalty to the regime that they brought it down?   How can we, the 99%, apply their strategies to today’s struggle for equity?     This event is the 4th in a series.  Free.  All welcome.

Sanctuary Steering Committee

Offering Sanctuary Everyone interested is invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the group planning for providing refugee sanctuary to “an individual who meets the criteria of the UN Convention on Refugees” and who has exhausted all other means to have their case heard. We have installed a shower, but beyond that we have not made further preparations. We must decide on a space for the refugee, obtain furniture, consider the needs of a person in sanctuary and have a system of volunteers in place to meet those needs such as shopping, laundry, friendly visiting, etc. We also need a fundraising plan to cover costs.
