Celebrating Mystery: Spirituality without Belief

Celebrating Mystery: Spirituality without Belief How do we celebrate being part of the mystery of the universe without a belief in God? What does it mean to be spiritual but not a believer? Drawing from writers such as Alain de Botton, Scott Russell Sanders, Chet Raymo, and Sharman Apt Russell, we will consider how Unitarian Universalism nourishes a sense of wonder through scientific knowledge and personal attentiveness. We will share conversation, stories and meditation. This class takes place on two non-consecutive Tuesday evenings. Tuesday April 17th and Tuesday May 1st 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to sign up for both evenings, but may attend only one. Please register with our intern minister Fiona Heath, This email address is being protected from spambots. Jesus Without Christianity

Jesus Without Christianity Mondays, April 16 – May 7, 7:00-9:30 pm with Rev. Shawn Newton Theodore Parker, the great Unitarian minister of the 19th century, said that he was more interested in the religion of Jesus than the religion about Jesus. Much effort has been made in the past two centuries to better understand what (little) we know of the historical, Jewish Jesus, apart from the Christians traditions that have developed over the past two millennia. This four-week workshop will endeavour to demonstrate how it is that Jesus became “Christ” and how his religious movement became Christianity. The text for the course will be Jesus for the Non-Religious by John Shelby Spong. Copies of the book will be available for sale in the Book Shop during coffee hour. There is no assigned reading for the first session, though participants are welcome to begin the book, if they wish.
