Do the Right Thing
Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton
Paper or plastic? Remember that great moral question? The one that for years confronted any shopper at the supermarket cash with more than a handful of groceries? It's not a question asked so often any more, given the proliferation of cloth bags and the move away from paper bags altogether. But it's the kind of question that reminds us of the seemingly small choices in our every day lives that have wider moral implications. I'll confess that I never really figured out the correct answer; compelling arguments were (and are!) made for and against both paper and plastic. Cloth now seems the obviously ethical answer, though I nervously await some future report of how our collection of cloth bags made from recycled plastic causes more environmental harm than we ever imagined! So, how can we trust ourselves to make the right choice when it matters most? How can we know how to do the right thing?
