From Silence to Attention (Sat. 22 Sep, 2012 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm)

From Silence to Attention

A Non-Violent Direct Action Workshop at the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, 175 St Clair Ave West at Avenue Rd, sponsored by Occupy First Unitarian.

Do you have an issue that is near and dear to your heart? Are you keen to make a difference - but not sure what to do? Are you looking for ways to garner media attention for your side of the story?

This interactive, dynamic and fun workshop, offers proven and practical strategies for getting heard. You will develop the theoretical and practical skills you need to determine when and how to use non-violent direct action to achieve your goals. Specific topics that we will cover include: types of direct action, how to ensure your action is strategic and effective, designing actions, action roles and responsibilities, and dealing with issues that arise during the action itself, such as addressing conflict and negotiating with people with different ideologies and approaches to action.

Facilitator: Jessica Bell, M. Ed., works as a facilitator and social movement trainer. She is the co-founder of Toronto training organization, Tools for Change, and a trainer with the Ruckus Society. Jessica teaches advocacy in the Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Management Program at Ryerson University.

Who should attend? Anyone seeking effective strategies for working on controversial issues - mega-quarry, tar sands, pipelines, Aboriginal rights, medically-assisted death, Occupy, G-20, & more.

Comments from past participants:
- An essential course for ... developing the fundamental skill needed to organize and advertise a rally or march
- A stimulating and informative workshop
- A great model of skill sharing and skill building
- Making me a better activist, allowing me to meet activists with diverse priorities and increasing my long-term resolve to work for justice and peace.
- There was a great mix of theory and interactive experiences. Most important, it was fun!”

The cost is $30, sliding scale. (Nobody will be turned away due to inability to pay; if you can pay a little extra, please do so to help us cover expenses).
