“Mental Health and the Way Things Stand” (Sun. 13 Jan, 2013 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Rev. John Marsh, Minister of First Unitarian, Ottawa.

Concerns about mental health have been with human communities from the beginning of recorded time, yet it remains an underfunded and often misunderstood area of healthcare.  People with mental health issues and their families continue to be stigmatized.  Advances in understanding have been accomplished by Canadian Unitarian pioneers in the field such as Joseph Workman and Brock Chisolm.  New advances promise a healthier future for all of us.

Social Justice Sunday Film Series (Sun. 13 Jan, 2013 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm)

Inside Job was the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008.

Through extensive research and interviews with financial insiders, politicians and journalists, academy-award nominated documentarian Charles Ferguson, traced the rise of a rogue industry and unveiled the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, monetary regulations and academia.

To paraphrase wise elders who have gone before us, 'If we don't learn from the follies of the past we are doomed to repeat them at our peril'.

"Inside Job" will be shown over two Sundays, January 13th & 20th from 12:15 - 1:30 p.m. in Shaw Hall.

Refreshments will be provided. Suggested donation $5.00.

All donations will be sent to the Transition Network to cover the cost of the film production.

Cakes for the Queen of Heaven (Wed. 16 Jan, 2013 6:45 pm - 9:30 pm)

Part II - ON THE THRESHOLD

Cakes for the Queen of Heaven is a woman-honouring course that's not just about history and archaeology; it's also about women's issues in a patriarchal society, about women's spiritual heritage.  How might our perspectives on life, history and the divine be enriched by exploring these teachings?  Imagine how life would have been different for all of us if our fathers and grandfathers had known the ways of the mothers and grandmothers. You are invited to share your own experiences and beliefs.

Together we'll create sacred space and work to change our stories.  It matters what we know - it matters what we believe.

All genders are welcome, and you do not need to have participated in Part 1 to join us for Part 2.

Facilitators: Debbie Kirkland & Ryan Cvirik (and participants are involved in presenting each session).
Sponsored by Womynspirit

Suggested donation: $30. Sliding scale, so everyone is able to participate.
