Technology and Tradition (Sun. 1 May, 2016 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

I’ve always been skeptical about this statement. Is that really true? Does change just bring us back to the place we started from?

This week, as we take up May’s theme of “Tradition,” I’ll be looking at the ways technology has changed and challenged tradition—both in our wider culture, and in the context of religious communities. What effect is screen-time having in our lives? In what ways do the tools of technology allow us to do things as a congregation our predecessors could have never imagined? And where is all of this going?

See you on Sunday.

In faith and love,

Twerty Somethings (Sun. 1 May, 2016 12:15 pm - 2:15 pm)

Looking for a little fun and friendship, all while getting filled up on some great food! Well, this Sunday, and the first Sunday of every month, the Twenty and Thirty Something crowd hit up Union Social for Brunch. We'll meet at the welcome table, just outside of the main hall, and head for brunch around 12:15. Can't wait to see you!

Issues and Ideas (Sun. 1 May, 2016 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm)

You are invited to our discussion of books on this month's topic, “Tradition”.

At our book circle we shall look at two books that treat different aspects of this theme:

  • Lynn Hughes will review two books by Barry Andrews on key shapers of our Unitarian tradition: Emerison as Spiritual Guide and Thoreau as Spiritual Guide
  • Carol Damioli reflects on our roots in secularism as discussed by Charles Taylor in his essay "Western Secularity" in Rethinking Secularism edited by Craig Calhoun et al.

Come and test your reactions to these reviews and share your own takes on the topic of Tradition.

Aboriginal Awareness Group (Mon. 2 May, 2016 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

Aboriginal awareness volunteers gather to plan events and educational materials for the benefit of the congregation and the wider community. Participants bring their knowledge, ignorance, and teachings to converge into something interesting to share. Usually we work by consensus on projects.
