Sun. 30 Apr, 2017

Conscious Capitalism (Sun. 30 Apr, 2017 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Terri Marks.

Toronto First is observing Earth Sunday today. A special testimony will be given, and donations will be collected to support the work of the Green Sanctuary group. These include investing in Bullfrog power for the church and special nature classes for the children, as well as the Green Moment and co-operation with Eco Justice activities.

Congregational Meeting (Sun. 30 Apr, 2017 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm)

The Real Estate Task Force will hold a congregational meeting after the service to present and discuss important matters related to the potential sale and relocation of our congregational building.

Childcare and lunch ($5 suggested donation) will be provided.

While there will not be a vote at this meeting, we encourage you to attend.

Our engagement with the real estate market has proceeded as authorized by congregational vote in September 2016, and we have significant activities to discuss.

Please also mark your calendar for two additional dates when votes may be called: June 11 and June 18.

Per our by-laws, any vote will be available to those who have signed the membership book, are 18 years of age or older, and have made an identifiable financial contribution (of any amount) to the Operating Budget of the congregation during the immediately preceding twelve months.

We would love full participation in any vote, and we encourage all to confirm their eligibility in advance.

Look for weekly updates from now until April 30 about the steps we are taking in this overall project. To recap our starting point, here are the reasons why we are taking these steps:

  • We can’t afford to stay.
  • Our building is not comfortably accessible.
  • Our spaces don’t work for us anymore.
  • There is no satisfying renovation option.
  • The value of our property, our biggest financial asset, is especially high right now.
  • Developers have not proposed satisfying plans to share this location.
  • Details for all of these points will be available at the meeting on April 30, or Learn More.

    UU Biographies (Mon. 1 May, 2017 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm)

Join us for a series of PowerPoint lectures with short biographies of Unitarians and Universalists, one letter at a time. With this format, each talk stands on its own, but after a few talks you'll have a good overview of UU history.

The biographies are often funny, often inspiring, sometimes scandalous. Talks are organised into sections: Arts, Science, Government, Education, Religion, and (my favourite) Agents of Change. Within each section, we go from oldest to youngest by birthday, to get a sense of what happened when.

Each talk is about an hour, so sessions are about 90 minutes with discussion.

John has collecting these stories for 7 years and has made it to letter K. He is going to make it exactly 26 talks by hook or by crook, but not one per letter; there are two talks for B, three for C, and so on. Rooms to be announced.

    • October 11: A is for Amazing Unitarians
    • November 8: B is for Brave Unitarians
    • December 14: B is for Brilliant Unitarians
    • January 11: C is for Creative Unitarians
    • February 8: C is for Clever Unitarians
    • March 15: C is for Courageous Unitarians
    • April 12: D is for Dynamic Unitarians
    • May 17: D is for Dedicated Unitarians
    • June 14: E is for Exciting Unitarians
