Showing Up in the Hard, Hard Times (Sun. 3 Dec, 2017 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Chris Wulff.

Greetings from Boston! This past summer, I was appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Association to serve on the Ministerial Fellowship Committee, the team of ministers and lay people that oversees the process for credentialing new ministers and the ongoing requirements for ministers in professional “fellowship.” I am excited by this appointment, as the formation and support of ministers is a matter near and dear to my heart—and, I believe, a significant way for me to serve our wider movement with long-term impact for the future. While the responsibilities of this role are substantial—especially on top of my life at First and UofT!—I am receiving tremendous gifts from this work that will strengthen my ministry with you. Being in regular conversation with new ministers is allowing me to take in ideas I’ve never considered about congregational life and our faith in action. In some ways, it’s like going back to seminary, as I dip my toes into exciting new currents in our ministry. It is refreshing and challenging, all at the same time.

Speaking of ministers-in-the-making, I am delighted that our Seminarian, Christopher Wulff, will be back in Toronto this Sunday to preach at First Unitarian. (I regret that I’ll miss hearing him, given that I’m in Boston this weekend for MFC interviews.) Chris and his family (now four generations of them!) are active members of our congregation. For the past two years, Chris and Ariel have been in British Columbia, where Chris has been undertaking his internship with First Unitarian in Victoria. Please welcome Chris back to Toronto this week. His journey into professional ministry is almost complete; our congregation can take pride in his accomplishments and know that our support of ministerial students and interns is giving shape in wonderful ways to the future of our faith.

In faith and love,

View the Order of Service.
