Anyone with a passion for maintaining our Green Sanctuary status, and with fresh, creative ideas for the new year, is invited to join us in the boardroom as we plan our agenda for 2018. We welcome one-time visitors but would love to add new full-time participants to our group. If you are interested, please contact Marg Wiebe by This email address is being protected from spambots. The Burdens of Freedom (Sun. 28 Jan, 2018 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton. This month, Unitarians around the world are celebrating 450 years of religious freedom. I’ll save that epic story for Sunday, but in the meantime, I hope you’ll give thought to the many freedoms you enjoy. And I hope you’ll consider the responsibilities that come with the freedoms that you have. In my sermon, I’ll explore what I think of as our blessed burden to share from the gifts we’ve received. The choir will be singing “Ella’s Song” —one of my favourite pieces by Sweet Honey and the Rock. See you on Sunday. In faith and love, Shawn View the Order of Service.

Amnesty International (Sun. 28 Jan, 2018 11:30 am - 12:30 pm)

During coffee hour we will sign letters requesting freedom for two people who work against slavery in Mauritania and we will call a halt to forced evictions of Sengwer Indigenous People in Kenya and request they be allowed to return to their lands.

Issues & Ideas: Prophecy (Sun. 28 Jan, 2018 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm)

The congregational theme for January is “Prophecy”. Please join us in the library, after the coffee hour this Sunday, to hear Terri Palmer present Henry David Thoreau's 1849 pamphlet Civil Disobedience and Herb Wright review No Is Not Enough by Naomi Klein (our own Canadian prophet's response to the rise of Donald Trump). You don't have to have read the books - this is an invitation to join in on a discussion of the issues at stake.

Peace and Quiet (Sun. 28 Jan, 2018 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

The chalice will be lit, ambient music will be played, opening words will be offered, and there will be a lengthy and deep shared silence during which you may simply be. The service will end after almost an hour with closing words and the extinguishing of the chalice.

Southern Ontario UU Midwinter Retreat (Fri. 2 Feb, 2018 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm)

This year's retreat will be at the YMCA Cedar Glen Retreat Centre in Schomberg, Ontario, just north of Toronto. It's a wonderful setting in rolling wooded hills, with rustic cabins and (hopefully) snow. The retreat will begin Friday evening with pizza and an informal gathering. Saturday there will be a keynote address by Anne Bokma, entitled My Year of Living Spiritually, followed by indoor workshops and outdoor explorations of the grounds, on foot, snowshoes, or toboggans (weather permitting!) Saturday night is party time, with music and refreshments. Sunday morning we'll have some more workshops followed by a service, and finally lunch before we all return home reinvigorated.
