Risk Tolerance (Sun. 18 Mar, 2018 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton.

Perhaps more than anything else, it defines how our lives unfold. Our tolerance for risk—and how that tolerance ebbs and flows over time—sets the course for our days on this earth.

Did we speak our mind, even as a kid?
Did we stretch to score that goal?
Did we dare to ask for that first date?
Did we invest in Apple, Inc. early on?

Rather than asking, at a party or at coffee hour, often awkward or sometimes inappropriate questions about a person’s background or what they do for work, it could be much more engaging to ask someone about their tolerance for risk. On Sunday, we’ll ask that question of ourselves, exploring how our openness and aversion to risk plays out in our efforts to live a life of integrity.

This will be a great service to invite friends to attend. We’ll welcome back our music director, Dallas Bergen, and enjoy the choir’s stunning rendition of Dolly Parton’s beautiful “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” as well as much by Gwyneth Walker’s “The Sun Is Love” to welcome the arrival of Spring and honour the celebration of Naw-Ruz.

In faith and love,

View the Order of Service.

Medical Aid in Dying (Sun. 18 Mar, 2018 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm)

Join the Pastoral Care Team in Shaw Hall in welcoming Toronto First member Anne Forbath, M.D., who will talk about the new law governing Medical Aid in Dying.

Dr. Forbath is a General Internist who worked on a general medical ward at a Toronto teaching hospital for many years, and now works as an Assessor in Ontario for people wanting to use Medical Aid in Dying.

She will describe the medical criteria that must be met by anyone wanting to use MAiD, and will answer questions on how the new law has been put into practice in Ontario.

Peace and Quiet (Sun. 18 Mar, 2018 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

The chalice will be lit, ambient music will be played, opening words will be offered, and there will be a lengthy and deep shared silence during which you may simply be. The service will end after almost an hour with closing words and the extinguishing of the chalice.

Calling the Barge – An Introduction to the Sisterhood of Avalon

Join this exploration of the teachings of the Sisterhood of Avalon, a spiritual community of women (inclusively defined) on a journey to cultivate self-determination and personal sovereignty through the five-fold cycle of healing, while building relationships with five Welsh goddesses known through the tales of the Mabinogi: Rhiannon, Ceridwen, Blodeuwedd, Arianhrod, and Branwen.

Centred on an exploration of the book “Avalon Within: A Sacred Journey of Myth, Mystery and Inner Wisdom” by Jhenah Telyndru, the founder of the Sisterhood of Avalon. Together we will explore the cycle of healing through the cycle of the moon and the wheel of the year, and explore the stories of each of the goddesses. Co-facilitated by Angela Lytle & Kia LaFey.

The facilitators will guide sessions, and the group will function as a gathering of peers to co-explore the work.

Note: You will need to borrow or purchase the book Avalon Within. It is also helpful to have a copy of The Avalonian Oracle deck to support our explorations.
