Moving To(o) Fast (Sun. 20 May, 2018 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Christopher Wulff. Ramadan began this week for our Muslim friends and neighbours, a period of intentional reflection on faith and charity, supported by fasting and prayer. What does such a practice offer to us as Unitarian Universalists, what space does it invite as spiritual practice? In a month in which our focus is on embodiment, what hunger and thirst is your body speaking to you? You are invited, as you are willing and able, to join me Sunday in taking the pre-dawn Suhoor meal and then fasting through the day until the sun sets, breaking fast with water and dates before the Iftar meal. We’ll have plenty of lively music (thank you Dallas!) to mask grumbling bellies. I am delighted to be welcomed back into the pulpit at First Toronto. It is always such a sweet homecoming for me. The last time I visited was in December just days after the UUA’s Ministerial Fellowship Committee (on which Shawn serves) welcomed me into preliminary fellowship as a minister, and it was a joy to share that news with you. The next stage in the process is ordination, which I have asked this congregation to perform for me on November 4th, and which you’ll vote on next week at the AGM. I cannot fully express my gratitude for everything that First has offered me in my formation and modeled for me in profound ministry. Thank you Blessings, Christopher Wulff View the Order of Service.

Womynspirit Course (Thu. 24 May, 2018 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

Calling the Barge – An Introduction to the Sisterhood of Avalon Join this exploration of the teachings of the Sisterhood of Avalon, a spiritual community of women (inclusively defined) on a journey to cultivate self-determination and personal sovereignty through the five-fold cycle of healing, while building relationships with five Welsh goddesses known through the tales of the Mabinogi: Rhiannon, Ceridwen, Blodeuwedd, Arianhrod, and Branwen. Centred on an exploration of the book “Avalon Within: A Sacred Journey of Myth, Mystery and Inner Wisdom” by Jhenah Telyndru, the founder of the Sisterhood of Avalon. Together we will explore the cycle of healing through the cycle of the moon and the wheel of the year, and explore the stories of each of the goddesses. Co-facilitated by Angela Lytle & Kia LaFey. The facilitators will guide sessions, and the group will function as a gathering of peers to co-explore the work. Note: You will need to borrow or purchase the book Avalon Within. It is also helpful to have a copy of The Avalonian Oracle deck to support our explorations. This six-session series will take place two Thursdays per month: March 8, March 22, April 12, April 26, May 10, May 24. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. To register, please send an email message to Angela Lytle and Kate Chung (with “Avalon Course registration” in the subject line), and with your name, email and phone number. Cost: $20 (sliding scale)
