Enoughness (Sun. 19 Aug, 2018 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton.

Greetings during these “dog days” of summer. I hope each of you has had ample opportunity in this season to connect (and reconnect) with what sustains you.

Over the course of my time away, I’ve been focussed primarily on my studies by doing quite a bit of reading and writing. Part of my dissertation will build on ideas found in Emerson’s “Divinity School Address.” On these warm days, though, my thoughts turn to Emerson’s use of the word “refulgent” to describe this season. I offer you these opening words from his discourse in hopes of inviting you out to notice the world around you:

“In this refulgent summer, it has been a luxury to draw the breath of life. The grass grows, the buds burst, the meadow is spotted with fire and gold in the tint of flowers. The air is full of birds, and sweet with the breath of the pine, the balm-of-Gilead, and the new hay. Night brings no gloom to the heart with its welcome shade. Through the transparent darkness the stars pour their almost spiritual rays…. The cool night bathes the world as with a river…. The mystery of nature was never displayed more happily. The corn and the wine have been freely dealt to all creatures, and the never-broken silence with which the old bounty goes forward, has not yielded yet one word of explanation. One is constrained to respect the perfection of this world, in which our senses converse. How wide; how rich; what invitation from every property it gives to every faculty…!”

I truly hope you’ve had at least a moment of such wonder this summer.

I look forward to being back in the pulpit this Sunday, as I take up the questions of vulnerability, trust, and an abiding sense of trust in a sermon titled, “Enoughness.” Our new resident musician Stephanie Bennett will sing “The Sound of Silence”. Mira Jung will be our guest pianist.

I hope to see you soon.

In faith and love,

View the Order of Service.

Our Pagan Grove (Tue. 21 Aug, 2018 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm)

If you have ever been curious about Paganism and would like to experience ritual in a safe and trusting environment, please come to Pagan Grove. We celebrate the eight Sabbats and the turning of the wheel of the year. Rituals are inspired by the congregation’s monthly themes, as well as social issues or the personal needs of participants. We honour and borrow from the various traditions of our members, and share the facilitation of our circles.

On the third Tuesday of every month, year-round, Our Pagan Grove meets in the Board Room at 7:15 p.m. to prepare for a 7:30 start. Bring drums and snacks if you wish. All are welcome.

We Agnostics (AA) (Tue. 21 Aug, 2018 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

We Agnostics is a program like Alcoholics Anonynmous in which participants are not asked to believe in anything except that recovery is possible.
